What is Proofreading?

Proofreading is the process of finding errors that were either missed from automated software applications or introduced during editing. The job of a proofreader is to safeguard against errors being present on the document's final draft when it is submitted for publishing. These errors can include subject-verb agreement, formatting issues, and incorrect word choice. Even after running your document through software that may be included on your device, the above-mentioned issues and typographical errors can go unchecked.

Proofreading is not Editing.

Although they are commonly used interchangeably, proofreading is not editing. Editing should have already taken place before the proofreading process begins. Granted, a document is proofread and edited to a certain extent as it is being created. However, reading over the entire document to ensure its clarity and organization is part of the formal editing process. If your document needs another look-over through an “editor’s lens”, check out our editing services.

Editing

Editing

Is it Editing or Proofreading?

Proofreading is the careful inspection of a document to find errors that occur in spelling, formatting, word choice, and style. This process occurs after editing and turns your document into a polished final draft. When your document is ready to undergo this step, check out our proofreading services.

The editing process focuses on adaptations to and suggestions about the content of a document. It consists of improving word choice, the overall “feel”, the arrangement, and general readability of the text. After editing, your document will have the flow and voice necessary to meet your specific application provisions and increase audience interest.

Editing

The content is reviewed and may undergo changes including rephrasing, reorganizing, and condensing of the document (if requested) according to the desired standards and targeted goals. If necessary, tables, graphs, and charts can also be edited to adhere to the other revisions within the document.

Why Should You Hire a Freelance Writer?

No matter where you are at with your business, you have content that needs to be written. Writing projects can encompass anything from rebranding to creating a new website or building content for a new start-up, and all of it takes time. When faced with a new project you have many important choices to make including who is going to write, edit, and proofread. This means pulling people off from other projects and hoping that they can actually write well. Your only other option is to take on another employee. Now your HR department (if you have one) is creating job postings, managers are interviewing, and then there is all of that paperwork.

We suggest another option. Let Elements of Speech create the content for you. Our writers are highly adept at researching for technical writing, formatting the voice of the document to align with your company’s brand, and ensuring that your target audience finds it informative yet engaging. We take the entire writing process off of your hands and off of your time clock, allowing you to do what you do best.
